Shoreham-Wading River School District named a ‘champion of change’
Shoreham-Wading River Central School District’s peer mentoring program is earning attention from the state.
The program was recognized by the New York State School Boards Association through its Champions of Change program, which honors initiatives making a positive impact on school communities across New York State. NYSSBA representative Bernadette Smith presented the district’s board of education with a Champions of Change banner at its Oct. 27 meeting.
Superintendent Gerard Poole said the district’s high school teachers are the reason the program is even possible.
“Because of the camaraderie, the care, the passion, the growth and the excitement by all involved, classes like these keep students motivated to come to school and strive for their best,” said Mr. Poole.
The district’s peer mentoring program aims to “foster an inclusive school environment where all students can learn alongside one another, build meaningful friendships and develop empathy, understanding and a strong sense of belonging.”
