Sheriff: Man was driving drunk on wrong side of Expressway

A Yaphank man was arrested Wednesday night after a sheriff’s deputy observed him traveling the wrong way on the Long Island Expressway while driving drunk, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office said .

Timothy Griffin, 43, was spotted crossing over the center median just west of Exit 71 on the L.I.E. and continuing westbound in an eastbound lane at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, sheriffs said.

He continued on in the wrong direction after a deputy sheriff attempted to pull him over before finally coming to a stop near exit 68, sheriffs said.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

Mr. Griffin, who was previously arrested in July for DWI, was charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated on drugs and alcohol, felony aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana.

He was scheduled for arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip Thursday.
