Injured paraglider now in fair condition at Stony Brook hospital

The medical condition of a 49-year-old Shirley man who was badly injured Sunday morning in a paragliding crash in Calverton has been upgraded from serious to fair, a Stony Brook University Medical Center spokesman said Monday.

The man, Marcelo Ibarra, crashed in a field shortly after taking off from the south runway at the Enterprise Park at Calverton property about 8:20 a.m., Riverhead Town police said.

He suffered a possible fracture of both femurs.

Mr. Ibarra was airlifted to Stony Brook for treatment of his injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration responded to assist Riverhead police in the investigation of the accident.

Police said the man was using a motorized paraglider in the crash.
