A man armed with a handgun robbed a gas station near Route 58 Wednesday night, getting away with an “undetermined amount” of cash, Riverhead police said.

The suspect, described by police as being in his early 20s, remains on the loose, according to a news release.

Police said the robber entered the Citgo gas station at the intersection of Route 58 and Osborn Avenue about 8:30 p.m. and demanded money from a store clerk while displaying the gun. The clerk gave the man the cash and the robber fled on foot, police said.

Police officers and the Riverhead K9 unit arrived at the gas station after the robbery and searched the area for the suspect, but couldn’t find him, according to the news release.

Riverhead police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the Detective Division at 631-727-4500 ext. 332
