One person was airlifted following a two-car accident on Sound Avenue in Wading River Saturday that closed the road in both directions between Hulse Landing Road and Fresh Pond Avenue, Riverhead Town police said.

Police said Thomas Jaeger, 55, of Riverhead was driving a 2003 Ford Escape eastbound on Sound Avenue in Wading River at around 11:30 a.m. and crossed over into the opposite lane, causing a head-on collision with a 2014 Nissan Sentra traveling westbound.

He was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by the Suffolk County Police Department Aviation Unit and treated for serious injuries, officials said.

Gail Brunner, 44, of Baiting Hollow was driving the Nissan with her passenger, Kristen Brunner, 16, also of Baiting Hollow, police said. They were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Wading River Fire Department and treated for non-life threatening injuries, officials said.

No charges were expected to be filed, police at the scene said.

The New York State Accident Reconstruction Team also responded to the scene and are assisting the Riverhead Police Department Detective Division with the investigation.

Witnesses are asked to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500.
