Cops: Pedestrian killed on Route 58 Sunday night in Riverhead

A pedestrian was struck and killed on Route 58 late Sunday night in Riverhead, according to New York State Police.

The victim was identified as 47-year-old April Valera of Levittown, police said. The crash occurred at the intersection of Kroemer Avenue and Route 58, police said.

Ms. Valera suffered a serious head injury and was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead, police said. No criminality is suspected.

A preliminary investigation revealed the woman was crossing south on Route 58 when a westbound pickup truck struck her, police said. The driver, who was not identified, remained at the scene and rendered first-aid, police said.

State police are asking anyone who many have witnessed the collision to call 631-756-3300.

Riverhead Town Police Chief David Hegermiller said the state police handle accident reconstructions, but he not did not specify further why state police are leading the investigation.
