Janice Smith

Janice Smith, wife of former Riverhead Town Supervisor and current Town Justice Allen Smith, died at her home in Aquebogue Jan. 1.

Ms. Smith grew up in Syracuse, N.Y., and earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in education from Syracuse University.

She moved to Riverhead in 1968 and married Mr. Smith, who was appointed as Town Justice in 2000 after the death of Town Justice Henry Saxtein. He was Riverhead Town supervisor from 1976 to 1980.

Ms. Smith taught English at Riverhead High School and Middle School. She also sang in the choir at Old Steeple Church and was a member of the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Ms. Smith is survived by her husband and her sons, Dakota, Jacob and David.

  • My wife, Adeline, and I knew Jan well and were very, very fond of her. We were always most envious of her passion, especially for teaching English at Riverhead Middle School. We were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of her passing. – Kevin Driscoll
