Today in Sports: SWR football team faces Babylon in playoffs

From 0-8 to 6-2, the Shoreham-Wading River football team will play its first postseason game since 2008 tonight when the Wildcats travel to Babylon at 6 p.m.

The Wildcats finished as the No. 5 seed in Division IV after losing last week to Mount Sinai. The Mustangs clinched the No. 3 seed and Babylon earned the No. 4 seed to earn home field advantage.

The Wildcats struggled to get anything going against Mount Sinai, a team that lost to Babylon 16-14 in the regular season. They’ll need a better effort at stopping the run if they hope to contain the Panthers’ offense. The Panthers have multiple backs who can carry the ball.

Shoreham and Babylon did not meet in the regular season this year. Babylon got off to a bit of a rough start this season, losing two of its first four games. Both were against the top two teams in the division, Amityville and John Glenn. Since then the Panthers have won four straight, including that pivotal win against Mount Sinai in Week 7. The Wildcats did not have a similar signature win during the regular season. Five of their wins came against the bottom five teams in Division IV. Their best win came against 4-4 Hampton Bays, the No. 8 seed in the playoffs.
