Calverton dog park opening postponed by 2 weeks

BARBARAELLEN KOCH PHOTO | The town's first official dog park should be ready by May 12. The two fenced-in areas were expected to open Saturday, April 28.

Riverhead dog owners will have to wait a little longer to take their dogs to the town’s first dog park.

The opening of Riverhead’s first off-leash park, located at the Enteprise Park at Calverton, has been postponed to Saturday, May 12, town officials announced Friday.

The dog park was scheduled to open Saturday afternoon, April 28, but was delayed because paving work in the new park’s parking lot hasn’t wrapped up.

“[Town workers] got a little held back on the grading [of the lot],” said Councilman Jim Wooten, who has been pushing legislation to establish dog parks in town. “They got it all fixed up but it’s pushed back a week.”

Access to the site, which consists of two fenced-in areas, will be restricted until the paving is done, he said.
