Unsolved mystery surrounds body found in Riverhead last year
A decomposed body found in a vacant barn in Riverhead was unable to be identified by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, Riverhead Town police said.
The person’s identity, gender and cause of death is “not known and probably will never be known,” said Sgt. Joseph Loggia, who added the body was too badly decomposed to determine who the body was or how they died.
The body was found in an unoccupied barn on the corner of Route 25 and Route 105 in Riverhead on Oct. 25, police said.
An employee discovered the body while looking for the property’s owner, according to a police statement. It appeared the dead person had been sleeping inside the barn, police said.
The body was removed by police for an autopsy. The barn where the body was discovered was later torn down.
