Boys Lacrosse: Cutinella goal lifts SWR into semifinals

Kevin Cutinella scored on a pass from behind the cage with 1 minute 49 seconds remaining to snap a tie and lift Shoreham-Wading River to an 8-7 victory over Eastport-South Manor in a Suffolk County Class B boys lacrosse quarterfinal on Saturday.

On the subsequent faceoff, Shoreham’s Joe Miller won the ball and the Wildcats ran out the clock.

“Good teams fine a way to win,” Shoreham coach As Coach Mike Taylor said. “I’m very proud of the way we buckled down that last minute and 30 seconds. Keeping the ball like that is not easy to do. Awesome!”

Chris Gray led the scoring for second-seeded Shoreham (15-2) with three goals and two assists. Jason Curran (two goals, one assist), Arline Xavier (one goal, two assists), Jon Constant (one goal, one assist) and Cutinella (one goal, one assist) also fed the Shoreham offense. Goalie Jimmy Pucker made 13 saves.

The game opened on a 2-0 run by Shoreham in the first period. After No. 7 Eastport (11-7) tied the score at 2-2 less than a minute into the second quarter. Shoreham took control and scored three more goals to take a 5-2 lead into halftime.

The game saw Eastport win the majority of faceoffs, 10-6.

Shoreham will play host to No. 3 Comsewogue (13-3) in a semifinal on Thursday.
