Walk for a cause: annual North Fork Breast Health Coalition awareness 5K returns to Tanger

The North Fork Breast Health Coalition’s 28th annual 5K Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness comes back to Tanger Outlets on Sunday, Sept. 27.

The fundraiser benefits the Riverhead-based non-profit, which provides myriad resources for breast cancer survivors on the North Fork.

“The annual 5K walk at Tanger Riverhead brings together breast cancer patients, survivors and thrivers, community members, elected officials and leaders in the breast cancer community,” president Melanie McEvoy Zuhoski said. “Proceeds from the walk help pay for the free services we offer to breast cancer patients and support our Lend A Helping Hand grant program.”

Participants can pre-register through the coalition’s website or register in-person from 7:30-8:45 a.m. on the day of. During that time, registrants can enjoy a breakfast that includes coffee, tea, muffins, granola bars and fruit. They can also buy raffle tickets for dozens of prizes.

The opening ceremony starts at 8:45 a.m., and the walk begins at 9 a.m.

Registration is $35 if paid after that date Sept. 19 or on the day of the event. The first 300 entrants will receive a gift bag.

Walkers are encouraged to gather pledges from friends, family and colleagues.

The all-volunteer, non-profit organization – which was founded in 1998 by Ann Cotton-DeGrasse and the late Antonio DeGrasse, with the help of Riverhead Rotary — supports local breast-cancer patients with programs such as the Helping Hand grants. NFBHC also funds stage IV research at select laboratories.

Proceeds from this event allow the group to continue to provide free services including gentle yoga, massage therapy, reflexology, and “Strength For Life” exercise to breast-cancer patients and survivors.
