Riverhead card store burglary nets almost $15K in cash, cigarettes

An unknown person took more than $10,000 worth of cigarettes and $4,600 cash from a Riverhead card store in the Wal-Mart shopping center early Tuesday.

Riverhead police received a report of an alarm at Bapa Cards and Gifts on Route 58 about 1 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

An unknown person had smashed the front door of the shop and taken about $7,500 worth of cigarettes by stealing 75 cartons from behind the counter and the store’s storage area. The $4,600 in cash was taken from the Lotto drawer, police said.

Detectives are investigating the incident, police said.
