Cops: Safes stolen at Baiting Hollow restaurant; reward offered

burglary in Baiting Hollow

Suffolk County and Riverhead Town police are asking for the public’s help identifying the suspect involved in a theft that took place at a Baiting Hollow restaurant June 15.

A man entered Cooperage Inn on Sound Avenue around 3:4o a.m. and stole two safes containing cash, according to a Suffolk County Crime Stoppers press release.

Riverhead police stated the safes were later found intact on the property and believe the attempted burglar fled the scene.

An employee at the restaurant told police that the interior office had been broken into and two safes were removed, according to the release.

Police found the safes elsewhere on the property with the content apparently undisturbed, officials said. Police suspect the burglar was inside the building when the employee arrived and ran away, leaving the safes behind.

A cash reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

Correction: The theft took place June 15. The date of the incident provided by Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and reported in an early version of this story was incorrect.
