Opiate pills reported stolen from vet’s office

More than 250 opiate pills intended for use in dogs and cats were discovered missing from a local veterinary hospital office last Tuesday afternoon, Riverhead Town police said.

Sometime between March 3 and April 9, about 260 50mg Tramadol pills, an opiate painkiller intended for use in animals, were removed from an office at Wading River Veterinary Hospital, police said.

Veterinary officials discovered the missing medication when updating a monthly inventory log, according to a report.

The medication was last seen in a drawer located in an unlocked procedure room, according to a report.

Tramadol is also available for human use – for treatment of chronic pain, according to the Federal Drug Administration.

Police officials are investigating.
