Agenda: SWR board to talk proposition tonight

The Shoreham-Wading River school board will update voters at tonight’s meeting on a recently approved proposition that will make repairs to district roofs, renovate high school science labs and fix code violations in the high school.

The proposition, which was approved by voters last month, authorizes the board to spend up to $4.98 million to make repairs.

The high school’s code violations — which include dead-end hallways, classroom egress issues and other areas in the building not in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act — were holding up a previously approved voter proposition last year to install new technology and repair the high school track.

District officials had said the state education department refused to approve plans for that proposition, saying the state would only allow the proposition to move forward if the district addressed the code violations.

Also during time for public discussion, students will propose to create a Gay/Straight Alliance Club before the board.

The meeting will be held at 8 p.m. this evening in the Shoreham-Wading River High School library.
