Cops: Flanders man left license plate after hit-and-run

Southampton Town police arrested a 24-year-old Flanders man Saturday for drunken driving and other charges after he left his license plate at the scene of a two-car crash, officials said.

Amilcar Soyos-Chamale was involved in an accident at the intersection of Flanders Road and Oak Avenue at about 1:25 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The male driver of the other vehicle told police he was heading south on Flanders Road when Mr. Soyas-Chamale’s car improperly turned left onto Oak Avenue, officials said. The unidentified driver also said his car crashed into a tree after Mr. Soyas-Chamale’s car hit his vehicle at the intersection, police said.

The driver of the other car was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with minor injuries, police said.

Mr. Soyos-Chamale then fled the scene and drove north on Flanders Road, police said. His license plate had fallen off and remained at the scene of the accident, officials said.

An officer located Mr. Soyas-Chamale about an hour and a half after the car crash, police said.

He had an odor of alcohol on his breath, slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet, according to police. He also had a suspended license and a forged resident ID card, police said

Mr. Soyos-Chamale was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, unlicensed operation, and other vehicle and traffic law violations, police said.
