Riverhead police say a Flanders man was caught setting fire to security barriers at the former Walmart building on Route 58 in Riverhead Tuesday night.
According to a news release, a 911 caller spotted 47-year-old Christopher Delane in front of the vacant building about 9:45 p.m. setting poles on fire.
Cops arrived and found Mr. Delane — who is a registered Level 2 sex offender — burning the covers on the security bollards and arrested him. He was charged with misdemeanor arson and held in custody to be arraigned in town court, police said.
Riverhead firefighters also arrived on scene that night and put out the fires.
