Skimming device found at Riverhead gas station

A skimming device designed to steal a customer’s credit card information was found by a technician at the Citgo Gas Station on Osborn Avenue in Riverhead Wednesday, according to a Riverhead Town police press release.

Police said the technician noticed the device on one of the pumps, but it was installed in a way to make it undetectable to a consumer pumping gas. Police do not believe anyone’s information has been compromised at this point since the device was not capable of wirelessly transmitting information. The device needed to be removed from the pump for information to be retrieve off it, police said.

Riverhead detectives responded to the scene and the device was removed from the gas pump and taken as evidence. The rest of the pumps at the gas station were checked and no additional devices were found, police said.

An investigation is ongoing and anyone with information can contact Riverhead police at 631-727-4500. All calls will remain confidential.

Police remind the public to stay vigilant and continually check credit card and bank statements for fraudulent activity.
