Pulaski Street School fifth graders recognize Flag Day
Pulaski Street School in Riverhead hosted its annual Flag Day celebration for fifth graders, welcoming the Daughters of the American Revolution to teach students about the history of the American flag.
Members of the Calverton-based Windcrest East Veterans Group participated in the event as well, and the Riverhead High School NJROTC Color Guard conducted a flag-folding ceremony.

“Students learned about the history and significance of our nation’s flag while reflecting on the values of freedom, service, and citizenship,” said Principal Stacy Woodhull. “Thank you to all of our guests and performers who helped make this meaningful event possible.”
This year marks the 249th birthday of the American flag, which was adopted on June 14, 1777. Flag Day was first proposed to rally Union support during the American Civil War, and in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson designated June 14 as Flag Day through a presidential proclamation. In 1949, National Flag Day was signed into law.
