Hundreds of experienced and first-time triathletes competed in the ultimate physical feat on Sunday at the Jamesport Triathlon on the North Fork — one year after prominent East End surgeon Peter Sultan died while competing in the race.
Sponsored by Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology, the USA Triathlon New York State Championship Race drew competitors under sunny, clear skies and temperatures in the high 70s.
The ironman event started at South Jamesport Beach with a 500-meter swim through Peconic Bay waters, followed by a 15.5-mile bike ride through North Fork communities and farmland. It finished with a 5K run.
Spectators and volunteers cheered as the racers crossed the finish line. Each finisher received a locally designed sunflower medal and celebrated with North Fork-grown corn.
Mattituck’s Owen Searl finished second in the individual race. Other North Fork competitors who placed among the top 20 included Cameron Brien of Greenport, who came in 12th, and Riverhead’s Kevin Goodale, who finished 13th.

Dr. Sultan died suddenly at age 54 while participating in the Jamesport Triathlon last July. The orthopedic surgeon practiced at Peconic Bay Medical Center for more than 20 years and was remembered for helping thousands of patients regain their mobility.
His teenage daughter, Elizabeth Sultan, later launched Peter’s Packages, an organization that provides comfort items to children and young adults navigating grief, as Riverhead News-Review reported.
