How to report damage from massive nor’easter

The Town of Riverhead and the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management are asking residents to report any damage to homes or businesses from last weekend’s powerful nor’easter.

Substantial indoor flooding, damage to personal property or inventory, or if a home or business is a total loss can be reported, Riverhead officials said Wednesday.

Damage to vehicles, fence lines or retaining walls does not qualify.

The state created an online form to collect information that may help officials identify additional damage and develop and expand potential requests for available federal assistance programs. 

The electronic form is sent directly to New York State. 

Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said there were more than 40 downed trees across the town from the storm’s high winds. Gusts also tore the fabric roofs off two highway salt barns, he said.

Mugs on Main was forced to briefly close until Tuesday after nearly six inches of water flooded its basement, owner Kasandra Watkins Schaeffer said. Groundwater had seeped in from beneath the concrete at the store’s 33 E. Main St. location.
