Cops: Woman seriously injured in Wading River crash

A Miller Place woman is in serious condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center following a motor vehicle crash on Route 25A in Wading River Saturday, Riverhead Town police said.

Jean Derespina, 56, was driving eastbound shortly before 7:30 p.m. when her 2004 Infiniti was struck head on by a 2014 Toyota 4Runner that was headed westbound but had crossed into the eastbound lane just west of Hulse Landing Road. Ms. Derespina was extricated from the vehicle by Wading River Fire Department volunteers, police said.

A third vehicle that swerved to avoid the accident left the roadway and struck several trees, but the passengers were uninjured.

Ms. Derespina’s husband, Frank, 56, and the driver of the 4Runner, Debra O’Connor, 46, of Calverton were transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

The New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and are assisting with the investigation, which police said is ongoing.

No criminal charges have been filed at this time.
