Helen Benanti Torio

Helen Gloria Benanti Torio of Riverhead died July 29 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 80.

She was born June 6, 1930, in New York City to Phyllis Defillippo. She attended St. Agnes School in Mount Vernon.

She married Joseph Benanti in New York City in 1947. He predeceased her and in 1988 and she married Charles Torio in Central Islip.

Ms. Torio worked at Woolworth’s in Central Islip as a salesperson for six years. She was a member of the Hampton Bays and Riverhead senior centers and was a supporter of the Hoboes and Junior Hoboes drill teams of the Central Islip Fire Department, as well as the Riverhead Ironmen.

According to family members, she enjoyed the New York Mets, playing bingo, frogs and watching all the fire department races and tournaments.

Predeceased by her second husband in 1998, Ms. Torio is survived by her children, Camilla Roth of Flanders, Frank Benanti of Riverhead and Joseph and Frances Benanti, both of Speonk; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors Aug. 3 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Funeral services were held Aug. 4 at Westhampton United Methodist Church. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
