Cops: Riverhead man charged with DWI following crash
A Riverhead man was arrested on drunken driving charges early Saturday morning after he was involved in a single-car crash on Route 24 in Flanders, Southampton Town police said.
Daniel Hough, 34, was headed westbound about 2:30 a.m. when he collided with a utility pole, police said. The car continued off the roadway, stopping in a wooded area, where an engine fire sparked.
Town police said a responding state trooper extinguished the blaze.
The damaged utility pole also caused a brief power outage for residents in the surrounding area and the road was closed for about 30 minutes, police said.
Mr. Hough was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and released on his own recognizance Saturday morning.
