John Barnes of Riverhead, known as Jack, died May 5 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 85.

He was born May 22, 1926, to John and Alice Barnes. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he worked as a truck driver for the Department of Agriculture on Plum Island.

He was a fan of NASCAR racing and the New York Mets, family members said.

He is survived by his daughters, Becky Havens of Hampton Bays, Sue Vega of Riverhead and Vicki Brown of Aquebogue; his sons, Jackie, of Medford, James, of Riverhead, and Tim, of Florida; his sister, Doris Turbush of Riverhead; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, May 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 9, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Cemetery in Riverhead.
