Elena Casanova died in Riverhead Care Center on March 14, 2013, at the age of 86. Formerly of Baiting Hollow, she resided in Westhampton.
Born in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, on April 8, 1926, to Ramon and Dolores (Aponte) Arana, she came to the United States when she was 18 and resided in the Bronx.
Elena had owned a travel agency in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and had been a community activist with the New York City Community Action Program.
In her free time, she enjoyed playing bingo and listening to music.
In 1985, she went back to Puerto Rico but returned in 2006.
Predeceased by her husband, Frank Casanova, in 1996, she leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Claritza and Bob Geremia of Westhampton; a grandson, Raymond; two great-granddaughters, Crystal and Jennifer; and a great-great-grandson, Aiden James.
Funeral services and interment will be in Hatillo, Puerto Rico.
