Bertram White Walker
Former Laurel resident Bertram White Walker, known as “Peter,” died March 14 in Naples, Fla., where he had lived for the last two years. He was 88.
He was born March 5, 1923, in Huntington and served in the Philippines with the U.S. Army during World War II. He survived 10 amphibious assaults, for which he received a Purple Heart.
He married Margery Marie Powers on April 15, 1960, and worked for the New York Telephone Company for 43 years, initially in Huntington, and later in Riverhead. In 1976, the family moved from Cold Spring Harbor to Laurel, where they lived for 21 years. Later, Mr. Walker and his wife divided their time between Southbury, Conn., and Marco Island, Fla., until 2007, when they became full-time Florida residents.
Mr. Walker is survived by his wife; his sons, Peter, of Cutchogue, and Timothy, of Lakeville, Conn.; his daughters, Patricia Herkert of Ryebrook, N.Y., Margery Scotti of Greenwich, Conn., Susan Wilcenski of Westhampton, and Amy Tenriero of Seekonk, Mass.; and 11 grandchildren.
There will be a funeral Mass Friday, April 15, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Mattituck. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
